Editor's Preface

Understanding the Ukrainian Business Landscape at a Glance

In the light of the current situation, it should be recognized that the legal market has remodeled itself over the last 10 years. In one case, a firm’s reputation booms right at the time of its establishment, while another only after several years of hard work. As doing business in Ukraine becomes more attractive than unrealistic, the need for qualified advice in the areas where a client has to meet certain obligations is apparent.

The increased sophistication of expansion strategies and thorough choice of legal support determined broader analysis during the compiling of the new Ukrainian Law Firms 2008. A Handbook for Foreign Clients.

This Handbook is an essential time saver, where clear presentation and global scope is quite helpful in pinpointing those issues that a client wants to address. First and foremost, this publication provides comprehensive information on Ukrainian legislative background. Second, this is the market’s leading guide to the top law firms and practitioners in Ukraine.

Continuing the tradition of introducing new approaches, this year our editorial team decided to represent more intricate complicated information, in-depth insight into the legal profession and to pay special attention to the monitoring encompassed in several tables with a list of deals in 2007.

The Handbook itself is divided into four sections. The first one is called Ukrainian Legal Market, and is a legal digest that provides information about the significant events of 2007 and acquaints readers with the dominant market trends and developments. The second section is the Practice Areas Review and covers the truly global areas of practice and offers a unique analysis of different domains and industries by acknowledged legal practitioners. Who is Who in Ukrainian Law by Practice Areas used to be called “surveys” by our contributors and discribes the names of not only top companies and individuals, but gives a general review of work carried out in practice with a reasonable amount of detail. The final part, which is called Law Firm Profiles, provides factual details about firms in Ukraine.

After the debut mixed transliteration in the previous edition, a lot of contributors and readers said it was a great idea. Therefore, we are not going to go back but will continue to be correct and tolerant of the requirements of our audience.

We owe the success of the Handbook to all the lawyers and firms that completed questionnaires, were interviewed by our researchers, as well as those readers and team members who not only generated constructive criticism but new approaches and ideas.

We hope that you find the guide a valuable addition to your library.

Happy reading!
